Compass Verdict

Is Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) a buy in 2026?

Hold. Dell Technologies is a wait-and-watch at today's price, not a fresh buy.

Dell's AI server surge is real but margins are thin, the PC refresh is priced in, and 28x trailing leaves little room for stumbles.

Where DELL is headed

Dell sold roughly $40 billion worth of AI-optimized servers in its last fiscal year, and that number will likely push north of $55 billion by early 2027. That sounds transformative, and in revenue terms it is: Dell has become the second-largest assembler of GPU-dense racks on the planet, trailing only Super Micro in unit volume and surpassing HPE in dollar terms. The problem is that assembling Nvidia's GB200 and B300 racks at scale is essentially a logistics and procurement business, not a technology business. Gross margins on AI servers run in the low-to-mid teens, roughly half the margin Dell earns on traditional servers and a third of what its storage portfolio generates. So a company growing revenue at 40% is growing operating profit at maybe 15-18%, and free cash flow is growing slower still because working capital requirements for AI builds are enormous (prepaying Nvidia for GPU allocations, carrying inventory for hyperscaler delivery schedules).
