Byline has spent the last three years turning itself from a scrappy Chicago community bank into the dominant SBA 7(a) lender in the Midwest, and by mid-2027 it should be running a roughly $10.5 billion balance sheet with a return on tangible common equity settling into the mid-teens. The Inland acquisition closed cleanly, cost saves are largely in the run-rate, and the SBA franchise (top-five nationally by origination volume) is the piece the market still underappreciates as a fee generator rather than a credit story. Management under Roberto Herencia has been consistent about the playbook, buy distressed or subscale Chicago-area banks, extract cost, redeploy deposits into higher-yielding commercial and sponsor finance loans. That flywheel keeps working.
